If you ever feel ordinary…

Last Saturday I attended an amazing event that is, as far as I know, unique to our stake. Once a year there is a Relief Society meeting held on a Saturday morning for the entire stake. Last year they announced that the theme would be “Come Unto Christ” and we were to do something throughout the year that would help us draw closer to Christ. The things presented were amazing! Personal fitness goals, home decorations,  family history, poems, journals, studying, talents developed and shared- what an amazing range of accomplishments. I’m feeling sad that I didn’t take the opportunity given.

The reason I am sharing this is to share with you the one phrase that I have carried with me in to this week. The Stake Relief Society President said, “If you ever feel ordinary, create something.” Her statement brought to mind Elder Uchdorf’s talk in general conference October of 2008.

Creation brings deep satisfaction and fulfillment. We develop ourselves and others when we take unorganized matter into our hands and mold it into something of beauty… The more you trust and rely upon the Spirit, the greater your capacity to create. That is your opportunity in this life and your destiny in the life to come. Sisters, trust and rely on the Spirit. As you take the normal opportunities of your daily life and create something of beauty and helpfulness, you improve not only the world around you but also the world within you.”

So in the spirit, if not the time-frame, of the Stake Relief Society’s challenge, here are some things I have created in the last year:

  • a baby
  • a more organized home
  • countless meals
  • I have learned how to cook for diabetic and renal diets
  • more patience (a constant work in progress)
  • cute baby shoes
  • baby towels
  • baby bags
  • a book for my in-laws
  • many scrap-booked pages about my family
  • memories I will always treasure
  • friendships
  • a closer relationship with my Savior
  • paid off a debt!
  • a love for my Young Women- they have made me proud and have made me cry
  • better understanding of how the Spirit speaks to me
  • a sleep deficit
There is still so much to be done.  I have so many goals, and so many wonderful things to do that each day is a joy and a disappointment. A joy to live each moment so fully and a disappointment to see it end. Here’s to a new year!
